the bridge (automatic garden) 2007

An abandoned railway bridge over the Drau-river in Carinthia. The area is dominated by linear movement (river, tracks, pedestrians). These imaginary lines are deviated to generate and cover the left-over surface – just like knitting or weaving. Referentially, different patterns are introduced.

Our material are carefully selected diverse plants, which make our „knitted surface“ a garden.
Its growth and blossom rhythms are creating a continuously changing environment.
Self-regulating mechanisms, such as seeding, watering, fertilizing and cutting, are operating on railway cars – the gardeners.
